Gas, charcoal, and woodchip grills each bring their own flavor and cooking style, but they also differ in how they affect the planet. Understanding their environmental footprints can help you choose a grill that aligns with both your taste buds and your values.
Grilling with Natural Gas
From an environmental standpoint, gas grills—powered by propane or natural gas—tend to be the cleanest-burning option. They produce fewer particulate emissions and significantly less carbon monoxide compared to charcoal. Because gas ignites instantly and heats quickly, it also wastes less fuel during startup.
Another advantage is efficiency. Gas burns more completely than charcoal, meaning fewer byproducts are released into the air. For people who grill frequently, this can add up to a meaningful reduction in overall emissions.

Another environmental advantage is temperature control. Pellet grills regulate heat automatically, which reduces wasted fuel and prevents overburning. This efficiency makes them a strong middle-ground choice for grillers who want rich smoky flavor without the heavy carbon footprint of charcoal.
The main drawback is electricity use—pellet grills require power to run their augers and controllers. While the energy draw is small, it’s still a factor to consider.
